About Us

Who we are, what we do

The Geonium Chip Research Group is hosted by the University of Sussex. Our research focuses on developing the next generation of Penning trap technology through the Geonium Chip: a compact, scalable platform that combines planar trapping electrodes, integrated particle detection electronics and novel planar superconducting magnetic field sources. Penning traps are one of the most powerful experimental tools in modern physics. Our vision is to make these devices substantially smaller, more affordable and accessible to a much broader scientific and industrial community.

Technology transfer

Research within the group has been supported by the University of Sussex, UKRI, through ESPRC and STFC, Innovate UK, DSTL, and Leonardo Ltd.

We are also actively exploring opportunities to transfer our technology into practical applications. This includes the possible licensing of Geonium Chip technologies and sub-systems to industrial partners. We welcome discussions with companies, investors and organisations interested in quantum technologies, superconducting magnetic field sources, microwave sensing applications, mass spectometry and others.

We work closely with the Innovation and Bussiness Partnerships team of the University of Sussex and with our incubator Sussex Innovation.

Collaborate with us

We are always interested in establishing new collaborations with researchers, industry and funding organisations. If you are interested in our research or would like to discuss collaborative projects or commercial opportunities, we would be pleased to hear from you.
